Advanced Treatment Systems for residential and commercial septic systems are mechanical additions to the spetic tanks that allow for a higher level of treatment of wastewater prior to discharge into the environment. These systems may be required by County Health Departments in some cases. The systems introduce air (oxygen) into the wastewater allowing bacteria to digest the organic matter, convert the ammonia to nitrate and convert the nitrate to nitrogen gas. Nitrate is a regulated pollutant for drinking water (i.e. your well).
The photo above is of a MicroFAST system installed for a residence. This system requires a small blower shown in the green protective box elevated by the concrete blocks. This photo was taken before the system was backfill with soil.

The photo above is that of an AdvanTex AX20 system. The rectangular box has 20 square feet of filter media fabric inside. A pump in the septic tank lifts the wastewater and it is applied to the surface of the fabric in the box. The wastewater flows through the fabric where bacteria digest the organic material and convert ammonia to nitrate. The water then flows back into the septic tank. The wastewater is typcally recirculated through the filter fabric box at least 5 times on before it is discharged to the drain field. When the wastewater flows back into the septic tank, other bacteria convert the nitrate to nitrogen gas. This photo was taken before the system was backfilled.
The photo above is that of a HOOT system. The HOOT system also uses a blower to add air (oxygen) into the wastewater in the septic tank. This allows bacteria to digest the organic matter.
